First 5 ELSEE Teaching Garden at Cureton Elementary School

This garden was designed for the school’s Pre-K classes, but teachers would visit the garden with their older students to conduct outdoor learning lessons. This garden includes grassland, chaparral, oak woodland, riparian, a teaching circle, and a sandpit. It includes avocado, prickly pear, wild grape, elderberry, an apple tree, and raised beds using landscape wattles. Wattles are traditionally used for erosion control on hillsides, but they can be used for raised beds at a greatly reduced cost. Many perennial and annual food plants were planted in six raised beds, which were surrounded by native plants that attract many species of pollinator and predator insects.
